Brief Background
@"Shotoku" means the virtues of the pine tree.A pine tree is known for its strength, sturdy in nature and ever green.. Shotoku is a Catholic mission school in Matsue city which was established by the "Hijas de Jesus" Sisters on December 8, 1956, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. As envisioned by Candida Maria de Jesus, foundress of the Congregation of the "Hijas de Jesus , the school's aim is the integral education and formation of youth based on the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. The "Hijas de Jesus" educative centers exist in the three continents: Europe, Asia and South America.
Geographical Location, Historical Spot and Personages
@"Shotoku" is located in the western coast facing Japan Sea in the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture.
@The Shinto Headquarter in Japan, "Izumo Taisha" (Izumo Shrine) is one of Shimane's historical treasures.
Doctor Takashi Nagai, a Japanese Catholic physician who offered his unselfish service to the atomic bomb victims of Hiroshima hailed from Mitoya, a small town in Shimane. Dr. Nagai died himself as a victim of the atomic bomb after effect. His life has influenced numberless lives through his spirit of charity and good work for his fellowmen.
@Sister Yasu Esumi, the foundress of a local Japanese Congregation named "Junshin (pure heart) Seibo Shudo-Kai" which is a congregation that promotes education through universities and schools in Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Tokyo was born in Hikawa, a town that lies between Matsue and Izumo City, Sr. Esumi's work in incorporating Christianity into the Japanese culture through education for women has been recognized by the Japanese government.
SHOTOKU'S NEW VISION
On the 50th Year, of "Shotoku's " presence in Shimane Prefecture, it introduces new distinctive characteristics based on the needs of the time:
  1. Co-educational System - On the 50th year of foundation, the new direction is to strengthen the youth's wholesome and integral adjustment to society in a co-educational ambience, enrich his spiritual giftedness, participate in the cultural exchange with other youths from other countries and introduce him to the awareness and involvement with his surroundings through voluntary activities.

  3. Advanced Course - Lessons and experiences in preparation for higher studies.
  4. Organized new curriculum - 32-39 hours of classes weekly in preparation for the chosen course or studies leading to a 2-year college course or job placement after high school.
  1. Significant Educational Offers

    (1) Personal@Career Guidance Aptitude test and formation to 1st year to 3rd year high school students in preparation for the chosen course in the university.
    • Counseling and personal interview for career guidance
    (2) International- Cultural Exchange and Global Consciousness Education
    • International and cultural exchange with the sister schools
    • Social assistance consciousness: Social activities for community welfare, home for the aged, orphanages, hospitals and handicaps. Credited units (class) in "Home Helpers"
  2. Academic Contents and Scope

    32-39 hours a week classes: 45 minutes per subject
    (1) Advanced Course
    Intensive weekly classes of 39 hours; extensive academic studies in summer and winter vacation. Extra hours of studies for the national comprehensive examination in the 5 subject areas of Science and Mathematics aiming at a score of 70%.
    (2) Global Course
    Focusing on:
    Year 1 - Basic subjects: English and Japanese
    Year 2 - Elective Subjects: Social Science, Mass Communication, Young Adult Psychology and a wide range of related academic training and enrichment.

      • DeliberationCourse Basic studies of English, Mathematics and Japanese
      *The Global Course aims at assisting the student's career choice according to his potential and ability.

      • Arts, Technical Course,Job Placement Elective subjects are offered for:
        Year 2 - Weekly 6- hour classes
        Year 3 - Weekly 10-hour classes
